Prayers and Silence – When God Breaks Through
Scripture: Luke 1:11-17
“And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”” (Luke 1:11–17, ESV)
Zechariah stood before the altar, and smoke swirled upward like prayers reaching for heaven as the smell of incense surrounded him. Outside, the muffled murmur of worshipers praying in the outer courts faded into a profound stillness. The flames of the golden lampstand flickered to his left; the table of shewbread rested quietly on his right. A richly adorned veil served as a reminder of his sacred task. Zechariah stood just outside the heart of the temple—the Holy of Holies.
The Holy Place was reserved for priests who mediated on behalf of the people of Israel. But for centuries, heaven had been silent. No prophets had spoken; no angels had appeared. Zechariah focused on his responsibilities and tended the altar, spreading the incense that symbolized the prayers of Israel—prayers for deliverance, redemption, and the fulfillment of promises long delayed. Suddenly, everything changed as Zechariah experienced the supernatural. He froze, his heart racing. Fear gripped him as the veil between the seen and unseen realms seemed to tear apart. An angel, a messenger of God, stood to the right of the altar, bringing a message that would change Zechariah's life and the course of history.
GOD SHATTERS THE SILENCE
It had been over 400 years since God's last recorded words to His people through the prophet Malachi. Generations had come and gone, waiting for the promised Messiah, clinging to prophecies that must have seemed like fading echoes. Zechariah had experienced a deeply personal divine silence. His prayers for a child went unanswered for years until they finally yielded to the reality of age. But God had not forgotten. The angel brought word from God and shattered the silence. Zechariah's prayer—whether for a son or Israel's salvation had reached heaven. And God's response, in a moment of angelic revelation, would be greater than he could have ever imagined.
The angel announced that Zechariah and Elizabeth would have a son who would be like Elijah. Their son, John, would bring joy and play a key role in God's redemptive plan. Malachi's prophecy declared that someone was coming to prepare the way for the Lord, and now the angel's message was clear—Zechariah's son would fulfill this role in the spirit and power of Elijah. John would be a fiery prophet who would turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the disobedient to wisdom. He would prepare a people for the Lord. The long silence had ended in an instant, and the ancient promises were now unfolding.
REFLECTION: KEEP PRAYING
When we pray, God listens. Though His answers may not come when or how we expect, they are always good. Zechariah and Elizabeth's story reminds us to remain faithful, even in the waiting, and to trust in God's perfect timing. Keep praying, for God's answers often exceed our expectations.
