HIDDEN JOY – FROM SHAME TO HOPE

Elizabeth’s hidden joy as she embraces God’s promise.

Scripture: Luke 1:24-25

“After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”” (Luke 1:24–25, ESV)

HISTORY AND HOPE

The story of Elizabeth and Zechariah is part of something much bigger than we can imagine. John 21:25 reminds us, "T_here are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written._" God's story—His plan of salvation, His faithfulness, His power, and the hope He brings to His people- has been recorded across the ages and will never end. The miraculous pregnancy Zechariah and Elizabeth were given was a personal blessing and a powerful reminder that God always keeps His promises.

Remember that Elizabeth came from a priestly line and knew the Scriptures. She would have known the stories of Sarah and Rachel and how they experienced a similar removal of shame through God's miraculous intervention. Elizabeth's words echo Rachel's words in Genesis: "God has taken away my reproach." The link between the stories of these women bridges history and hope, showing us that God's faithfulness is unchanging.

As Elizabeth kept to herself for five months, she may have reflected on the spiritual significance of her pregnancy. God was at work in a unique way. Time passed slowly and quickly as she experienced the joys and challenges of her changing body. Each new day brought a better understanding of God's goodness and grace as hope replaced the shame she had carried for so long.

UNEXPECTED JOY AND QUIET CELEBRATION

Imagine when Zechariah returned home; he had been trying to figure out how to explain to Elizabeth what had transpired in the temple. Though he could not describe it with words, his excitement would have been unmistakable. With her unique insight as his wife and a woman of deep faith, Elizabeth continued to piece things together until the miracle became clear. Together, they shared a joy that surpassed words.

Imagine the day Elizabeth realized she had conceived—her heart must have soared. I don't know what a silent scream sounds like, but Zechariah does... They chose to keep the news private. The Bible doesn't tell us why, but maybe she wanted some time alone to savor the moment. Maybe she wanted to avoid the whispers of the community. Maybe she wanted to protect Zechariah and not expose him to public scrutiny. Maybe she wanted to wait until God's plan unfolded further.

In those quiet and precious months, Elizabeth experienced a sacred intimacy with God, her husband, and the child growing within her. Her joy, although hidden, was profound. Her son was no ordinary child—he would prepare the way for God's Messiah. With each passing day, Elizabeth's faith grew, knowing her son was a sign of God's power and faithfulness to His people.

REFLECTION: TRUSTING GOD IN EVERY SEASON

Elizabeth's story reminds us that God is faithful. Are you feeling the frustration of waiting or experiencing the sting of disappointment? Elizabeth's joy increased after years of longing and seemingly unanswered prayers. Yet, in God's perfect timing, her shame was replaced with hope.

What part of God's amazing story are you struggling to trust? Elizabeth shows us that even in the waiting, God is working. Her quiet celebration invites us to trust God's timing and rest in His promises. Remember, His timing is perfect, and He is always working for our good.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:

  1. Celebrate God's Faithfulness: Reflect on how God has been faithful in your life. Write down specific moments where you've seen His promises fulfilled.

  2. Lean Into the Waiting: Use times of waiting for worship and focus on your relationship with God instead of focusing on your disappointment. Consider what He might be teaching you during this season.

  3. Offer Hidden Praise: Today, thank God for blessings you may not yet understand or fully see. Trust that He is working behind the scenes.

A PRAYER FOR TRUST IN GOD’S PROMISES

Lord, thank You for being faithful. You are faithful through every season of life. Help me to trust Your promises, even when the answers seem far off. Replace my doubts with hope and my shame with joy that I might celebrate Your goodness every day. Amen.
